Ma

Ma gave up a concert pianist career to have children. I loved having siblings. It was safe for 12-year-old me to take 6-year-old sister on public transportation. I appreciated the trust and independence. Woolworth's egg creams, Coke and fries, 25-cent double-feature movies plus shorts and live entertainment too. We were poor but given opportunities - Miss Moody's dance lessons, violin, piano, basket weaving at the Christian church, opera and Shakespeare school trips, swimming at indoor pool St. George hotel NYC, and ceramic painting classes with Ma. I admired her constant absorption reading the dictionary and encyclopedias for fun and NYTimes Sunday crosswords. Ma never spoke badly of another, never learned to drive. I longinly admired the elegantly tailored clothes from the 1940s that went unworn. I'm grateful her 6 births (lost one). were painless.
